Wallis Simpson: knitwear pioneer

Today I have been reading about Wallis Simpson and her knitting. During the Second World War the Duchess of Windsor - a wearer of some awesome knitwear - was involved with the relief organisation Le Colis de Trianon, which sent out care packages, including jumpers and mittens, to the troops. Her husband was also no stranger to yarn:

Having been taught in the nursery at York Cottage, the Duke was accomplished at both knitting and crochet. The Duchess needed a little practice to become proficient, but she too was soon knitting very expertly. She even invented a new type of mitten with a zipper attachment, which allowed the soldier to use his trigger finger in an emergency.
